Kann man das machen? Sich auf der einen Seite in konventioneller Weise mit Fotografie auseinandersetzen und entsprechende Ergebnisse produzieren und gleichzeitig auf der anderen Seite Bilder erstellen, die zum einen mit dem Handy aufgenommen und zudem auch noch über eine entsprechende App automatisch bearbeitet werden? Abgesehen davon, dass diese Art der Fotografie inzwischen ein Massenphänomen geworden ist, hat diese zwischenzeitlich auch den Kunstmarkt erreicht. Kürzlich erst fand in London eine große Ausstellung nur mit Bildern dieser Art statt. Ich meine zu Recht. Denn letztlich kommt es ja wie bei allen anderen Möglichkeiten der Aufnahmetechnik und Bildbearbeitung zu erst einmal auf die Bildidee an. Und dann ist da noch die Sache mit der Bildgestaltung. Und erst dann stellt sich die Frage der automatisierten Bildbearbeitung. Ein Bild ist nicht perse deshalb gut (oder schlecht), weil es rein technisch betrachtet, ohne großes Zutun des Fotografen entsteht. Selbst bei der Verwendung der Apps ist zu überlegen, welche Motive für die Umsetzung mit genau dieser Anwendung geeignet sind, so dass sich die gewünschte Bildwirkung einstellt. Puristen und Dogmatiker unter den Fotografen wird das natürlich schwerlich überzeugen.

Doch sehen sie selbst und bilden sich ihr eigenes Urteil.

Can you do that? On the one hand, producing pictures in a conventional way and on the other hand to take photographs with the mobile phone including being automatically processed via an appropriate app? Apart from the fact that this type of photography has become a mass phenomenon, it has reached in the meantime also the art market. Recently in London took place a big exhibition with photographs of this kind. I think it’s ok so. At first it is a question of the picture idea, followed by the questions of composition. And only after that issue of automated picture processing become important. A picture is not per se good (or bad) because it is – only considered from a technical point of view – being created without the intervention by the photographer. Even with the use of apps you have to find motives which are applicable for the realization with exactly this application so that the desired image effect ceases. Dogmatists and purists among photographers, won’t be convinced by this.

But see yourself and make your own judgments.

Nach 8 Wochen ist nun gestern auch die Ausstellung in der Rote Beete in Berlin mit einer schönen Finissage zu Ende gegangen. Leider musste das Programm kurzfristig geändert werden, aber dankenswerterweise ist Roberto Cianchetta spontan eingesprungen. Und es war ein Abend mit netten Gästen, schöner Musik und ebensolchen Gesprächen. Danke dafür. Und auch vielen Dank an Suzan und Andreas für die tolle Unterstützung und die Gelegenheit, in der Rote Beete ausstellen zu können.

Und wer jetzt noch nicht genug von mir hat, der kann noch etwas über mich in dem Artikel “ich sehe was, was du nicht siehst” (pdf) erfahren.

After 8 weeks, yesterday the exhibition in the Rote Beete in Berlin ended with a nice closing event. Unfortunately, the program had to be changed at short notice, but thankfully Roberto Cianchetta could perform spontaneously. And it was a nice evening with nice guests, nice music and just such conversations. Thank you for that. And I want to thank Suzan and Andreas for their great support and the opportunity to show my photographs at the Rote Beete.

Finissage zur Ausstellung am 13. November 2011

Auf den ersten Blick, rein äußerlich betrachtet, haben die Bilder aus der Reihe “the beauty of ruins” von Jörg Rüger und die Sängerin Alda Fontes nichts gemeinsam. Es ist die Musik, die die Gemeinschaft herstellt und damit für die Finissage zur Ausstellung wie geschaffen scheint. In leisen, sehr differenzierten und sinnlichen Tönen vermittelt die Musik eine Stimmung, wie sie manch eine(r) auch beim Betrachten der Bilder verspürt, einen kraftvollen Ausdruck, eine sehnsuchtsvolle Tiefe. In beiden Fällen ist es sehr lohnend, die Vielschichtigkeit zu erforschen und auf die vielen kleinen Einzelheiten zu achten, genauso, wie man einfach auch nur die von den Bildern oder der Musik ausgehende Stimmung auf sich wirken lassen kann. So stellt der Auftritt von Alda Fontes einen gelungenen Abschluss der Ausstellung dar.

Die Finissage findet am 13. November 2011, ab 19:30 Uhr, in der Rote Beete, Gleditschstraße 71, 10781 Berlin, statt.

At first glance, Jörg Rüger’s photo series “the beauty of ruins” may not have an apparent connection with aldaland’s jazz trio. And yet, the sound of ageless music wrapped in the warmth of a voice that seems to come from another time, does seem to echo the places in the photos. In quiet, sophisticated sensual tones, the music evokes a certain mood, a certain deep longing that connects the past with the beauty of present ruins. In both music and image, it is worthwhile to experience the nuances, follow the sounds and get lost in the rooms of another time. Or just come, take one last look at the photos and simply enjoy the evening in good company, while aldaland’s jazz trio lends a finishing note to “the beauty of ruins” exhibition.

The closing event will take place on 13th November 2011, 7:30 p.m., at the “Rote Beete”, Gleditschstraße 71, 10781 Berlin.

Ausstellung “the beauty of ruins” vom 18. September bis 13. November 2011

Wenn mich am Anfang des Jahres jemand gefragt hat, was ich so mit den Fotos mache, die ich da produziere, habe ich mit den Schultern gezuckt und standardmäßig geantwortet, dass ich mich selber an deren Anblick erfreue. Wenn mir nun jemand gesagt hätte, dass ich mit den Bildern der Reihe “the beauty of ruins” nun gleich 3 mal eine Ausstellung haben würde, ich hätte ihn wohl nur erstaunt angesehen. Und auch jetzt noch bin ich erstaunt und erfreut zugleich über das Interesse und den Zuspruch, den die Bilder finden.

Was aber ist es, dass an diesen Bildern so gefällt? Eigentlich zeigen die Bilder auf den ersten Blick die weniger schönen Seiten des Lebens, Vergänglichkeit und Zerfall überall. Sie erinnern daran, dass nichts von Dauer ist – erstrahlte es gestern noch in glanzvollem Licht, so ist es morgen vielleicht schon nicht mehr da. Aber heute gibt es diese Objekte noch und sie erzählen dabei Geschichten aus einer Zeit, die längst vergangen ist. Man muss nicht vor Ort gewesen sein, um die Aura zu erleben, die die Objekte umgibt. Auch ist es egal, an welchem Ort sie sich befinden. Die Bilder setzen ein Erinnern in Gang, welches für jeden Betrachter unterschiedlich ist und berühren dabei auf ganz eigentümliche Weise. Die besondere Aufnahmetechnik und die Ausarbeitung der Motive unterstützen dieses emotionale Sehen. Ja, vielleicht ist es genau das …

Nun gibt es also ein drittes Mal in diesem Jahr die Gelegenheit, einen Teil der Bilder in großformatigen Drucken zu sehen. Neben bereits gezeigten Motiven gibt es auch einige neue zu sehen. Die Ausstellung eröffnet am 18. September 2011 mit einer Vernissage (ab 18:00 Uhr) in der Rote Beete, Gleditschstraße 71, 10781 Berlin (Infos zur Anfahrt).

When, at the beginning of the year, I was asked the question, what I’m doing with the photos, which I produce , I shrugged my shoulders and answered standardly that I like just watching them. If someone had told me then, that I would have three times an exhibition with the pictures of the series “The beauty of ruins”, I would have probably looked just amazed. And even now I am amazed and delighted by the interest and encouragement, which these images get.

But what is it, that these pictures are liked like that? Actually, the pictures show, at first glance, the less beautiful sides of life, transience and decay everywhere. One is remembered that nothing is permanent – was it shining in a brilliant light yesterday, maybe tomorrow it is already no longer there. But today these objects are still there and they are telling stories from a time that is long gone. You must not have been on site to experience the aura that are around these objects. Also, it does not matter where they are located. The photographs are initializing a remembrance , which is different for every viewer, and they are touching on very special way. The special technical way, how they are produced and the development of the motives support this “emotional watching”. Yes, maybe that’s it …

Now there is a third time this year the opportunity to see some of the pictures as large format printings. In addition to motives which already shown, there are also some new ones. The exhibition opens on 18. September 2011 with an opening reception (from 6 p.m.) in the Rote Beete , Gleditschstraße 71, 10781 Berlin (how to get there).

Architekturfotografie?

Weil ich mir nicht sicher war, ob meine Aufnahmen in das Genre der Architekturfotografie gehören, musste ich erst mal nachlesen. Bei Wikipedia gehört demnach alles dazu, was sich mit der fotografischen Abbildung von Architektur beschäftigt. Wenn man dann jedoch weiter liest, dann wird dieses doch eher einschränkend gesehen, so dass es im Wesentlichen bei der Architekturfotografie um eine fotografische Dokumentation von Architektur geht, ohne hierbei eigene, vielleicht sogar neue Aspekte zu schaffen. Hmmm, das ist jetzt noch nicht befriedigend. Interessanter ist da schon die Bedeutung des klassischen Architekturbegriffs. Demnach meint Architektur “die Kunst und/oder Wissenschaft des planvollen Entwurfs der gebauten menschlichen Umwelt, d. h. die Auseinandersetzung mit dem vom Menschen geschaffenen Raum und insbesondere der Wechselbeziehung zwischen Mensch, (vom Menschen geschaffenen) Raum und Zeit.” Da komme ich meinem Verständnis von Architekturfotografie schon näher, verstehe ich doch meine Aufnahmen weniger dokumentarisch als einen Versuch, durch die Fotografie des menschlich geschaffenen Raumes und meiner Sichtweise die subjektive erlebte Wechselbeziehung herauszustellen. So entstehen durch die ganz eigene Sichtweise auf den geschaffenen Raum eigenständige Objekte, die über die reine Dokumentation hinaus gehen. Aber die Antwort auf die eingangs gestellte Frage, ob es sich um Architekturfotografie handelt, überlasse ich jedem selbst.

Because I was not sure if my photographs belong to the genre of architectural photography, I had to study its defintion. At Wikipedia one can read that this term includes everything what is a photographic representation of architecture. But then if you continue reading, this definition is meant more restrictively, that the documentation of architecture is essential in architectural photography. Architectural photography is not to create own aspects. Hmmm, this is still not satisfactory. More interesting is the definition of the term architecture itself. Accordingly, architecture is “the art and / or science of well-planned design of the human built space, ie the confrontation with the human-made space and in particular the interrelationship between human, (human-made) space and time.” That comes closer to my understanding of architecture photography. I understand my photographs less documentarily and more as an attempt by taking pictures of the human-made space to create my subjective personal view. By this and my very personal perspective I create something new that is more than just documentation. But the answer to the question, whether it is architectural photography or not, everybody should give himself.

Manchmal muss man Opfer bringen …

Nachdem der seit längerem geplante und fällige Ausflug in das Berliner Umland in der vergangenen Woche wetterbedingt ausgefallen war, hat es diese Woche dann endlich mal wieder geklappt. Auto reserviert, Fotorucksack gepackt und los! Wie sehr sich so eine Tour von einer in der Stadt unterscheidet wurde mir spätestens (wieder) bewusst, als sich ungefähr eine Million Mücken (gefühlt) auf mich stürzten, während ich mir meinen Weg durch das Gestrüpp bahnte. Ich konnte es förmlich hören: “Frühstück!” Aber solche kleinen Widrigkeiten konnten mich in meiner Begeisterung nicht bremsen. Manchmal muss man eben Opfer bringen … .

Den Lohn für meine Opferbereitschaft gibt es hier zu sehen.

After last week the long-planned trip to the Berlin region failed due to the weather, this week it has finally worked out once again. Car reserved, photo-backpack packed and go! How much it is different from a tour in the city, I realized, when roughly one million mosquitoes (at least I felt it like this) fell on me while I went through the undergrowth. I could almost hear it: “Breakfast!” But these little adversities could not slow me in my enthusiasm. Sometimes you just have to make sacrifices … .

der minimalismus geht weiter

Das hatte ich nicht erwartet. Eigentlich wollte ich zu einer Tour ins Umland. Aber auf die schnelle war kein Auto aufzutreiben. Und ich wollte doch unbedingt heute noch mal raus zum Fotografieren, das hatte ich mir jedenfalls irgendwie in den Kopf gesetzt. Und da erinnerte ich mich der Schule in der Nachbarschaft, die durch ihre 70er Jahre-Architektur und mit ihren grellen Farben jedes mal auf sich aufmerksam macht, wenn ich dort auf dem Weg zum Einkaufen vorbeikomme. Das würde ja vielleicht etwas hergeben, für meine Reihe “neighbourhood minimalism”. Und tatsächlich gab es da einiges fotografisch zu holen, wie ich finde.

Aber schaut selbst, hier gibt es alle Fotos.

This I had not expected. Actually I wanted to go out for a tour in the surrounding region from Berlin. But I could not get a car so spontaneously. But I absolutely wanted to get out today to take pictures. And then I remembered the school in the neighbourhood, which allways comes to my mind with its 70ies-architecture and its bright colors when Im on my way to the shopping center. May be I could take some pics for my series “neighborhood minimalism”. And indeed there was a lot to photograph, I think.

Verlängert / Extended – Ausstellung “the beauty of ruins”

Die Ausstellung mit Bildern aus der Serie “the beauty of ruins” wird verlängert. Sie ist noch bis zum 15. August 2011 in den Räumen der Caritas Galerie in Berlin Reinickendorf (mehr Infos zu Öffnungszeiten und zur Adresse der Galerie) zu sehen. Also, wer die Ausstellung bislang nicht sehen konnte … .

Und weiterhin würde ich mich auch sehr über Ihre Resonanz zur Ausstellung, entweder als E-Mail oder Kommentar zu dem Artikel hier freuen.

Karneval der Kulturen

Es gibt in Berlin ein Wochenende im Jahr, da werden Mojito und Caipirinha zum Nationalgetränk, Salsa und Merenge zur meist gehörten Musik, Kreuzberg wird zur Partymeile und die verschiedensten Kulturen der Welt feiern einmütig ein großes Fest: Es ist der Karneval der Kulturen. Und in diesem Jahr spielte auch das Wetter mit, so dass Zehntausende die Straßen säumten und sich den Festumzug ansahen. Ich auch. Und was ich da gesehen habe – seht selbst.

Once a year in Berlin there is a weekend, Mojito and Caipirinha become the national drink, salsa and merengue the mostly listened music, Kreuzberg becomes a party zone and the various cultures of the world are celebrating a big party: It’s the Carnival of Cultures. And this year also the weather was fine, so the tens of thousands lined the streets and watched the parade. And so did I. And what I’ve seen – see for yourself.

Oft sind es die kleinen Dinge, die verloren gehen in unserer manchmal fast übervollen Welt. Und nur durch Zufall fallen Sie einem auf und und regen zum Nachdenken an. “He, da war doch was?” … . Aber es können auch große Sachen sein, die verloren gehen, im materiellen wie im immateriellen Sinne, einfach an Bedeutung verlieren. Und manchmal bedingt das eine das andere. Sind Dinge nicht mehr bedeutsam, dann kann es passieren, dass sie auch gegenständlich verschwinden.

Mit dieser Rubrik möchte ich große wie kleine, wichtige wie unwichtige Dinge zusammentragen, die mir aufgefallen sind, gewissermaßen als Fundstücke wenigstens kurz wieder Bedeutung hatten.

Often it’s the little things that get lost in our world which is sometimes almost too full. And only by chance you take notice of them and start to reflect. “Hey, wasn’t there anything?”…. But it can also be great things that are lost, lost in a material or an immaterial sense, simply loosing their meaning. And sometimes the one thing is the reason for the other. When things are not important any more, then it can happen that they really disappear.

With this column I want to collect large and small, important and unimportant things that I noticed, and which became at least only for a moment a meaning again.
